Having a physical exam is one of the best things you can do to invest in your health and wellness. Physical exams allow your doctor to evaluate your health and keep an ongoing record of labs and other medical data that can help spot diseases early.
In Hershey, Pennsylvania, Danette J. Joseph, MD, offers comprehensive physical exams at Three Angels Family Practice & Wellness Center, helping patients stay healthy throughout every stage of life. If it’s been some time since you’ve had a physical exam, here’s what you can expect.
MEDICAL HISTORY AND “VITALS”
Your exam will begin with a review of your personal and family medical history, which we’ll use to help identify potential risk factors for diseases. Then, we’ll ask you to step on the scale so we can record your weight. Typically, we take your blood pressure at this point, too.
We’ll also ask about any medicines you’re taking, so bring a list of the actual medications to your appointment. Don’t forget to include over-the-counter medicines, like allergy medicines, vitamins, and other supplements. These can affect your health, as well.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
During the actual exam position of your visit, Dr. Joseph performs a series of medical evaluations based in part on your age, your gender, and other factors. In most cases, she’ll listen to your heart and lungs, look in your throat and ears, and palpate your belly area to check for lumps or other abnormalities.
She’ll check your reflexes and evaluate your skin, always looking for subtle signs that could indicate an underlying issue that needs treatment. Because being overweight is a risk factor for many chronic medical problems, she may also calculate your body mass index.
MEDICAL SCREENING AND TESTS
In most cases, Dr. Joseph orders a urine test and blood work to check your cholesterol level, glucose (blood sugar) level, and red and white blood cell counts. She may recommend other tests, like a mammogram or sexually transmitted disease testing, depending on your risk factors.
Your physical exam is also a good time to make sure you’re up to date on your immunizations. Some vaccines need boosters to remain effective, while other vaccines, like the shingles vaccine, are only provided during the adult years. You can find a list of recommended vaccines at the CDC website.
LIFESTYLE GUIDANCE AND TREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS
Your appointment is also a good opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns you have about your health. Some topics might be embarrassing to talk about but remember: Dr. Joseph is an experienced physician with a wealth of experience discussing all sorts of topics, so don’t hold back.
At the end of your visit, Dr. Joseph will discuss treatment recommendations, order medications or lab tests, and guide lifestyle changes that can help you lead a healthier life. Finally, she’ll let you know when to expect the lab work results or whether you need any follow-up visits.
